Camryn had stated that they had gotten the idea for the club because,  of how frequently they saw problems that could be solved by the practice.“The more I learned about yoga and meditation, the more I realized how much high school students could benefit from it,” she said.

She felt that “Mindfulness means keeping the mind focused on what you are doing in the moment and becoming more aware of your thoughts.”

Camryn notes that the club’s advisor, Ms. Deambrosio, has been an integral part in developing the club and its mission. “I have learned a lot about mindfulness from all of our guest instructors and from our terrific faculty advisor, Ms. Deambrosio,” Camryn said. “Being involved in this great club has made school more enjoyable and less stressful.”

When meeting with the advisor to the group, Ms. Deambrosio had talked about what the group was all about, and how it started, as well as what they base every meeting on (core values). She was involved in getting in touch with the girls and giving them a place to meet after school. She noted “by 2:10 my room completely transforms, I have fairy lights and the lights are off.”

The club’s belief basis Ms. Deambrosio said was  “the core values of our club are mindful thinking, so de-stressing during these really arduous times in teenagers lives. We promote a life that is true to yourself, and true to those around you.”

The club has seen the involvement of many local yogis and instructors. So far, the girls have been very honored to have such a positive reaction from the community members saying “We have been fortunate to have wonderful guests come to our club to teach yoga and meditation, including Stephanie Joyce, Michelle Seaver from CMP, and Ms. Julie Deery.” Ms. Deambrosio said.

In terms of “yoga curriculum”, a New Cannan mother, Stephanie Voss comes in to teach and formulate the curriculum with them and act as their yoga mentor.

The club has started out small but Lexi, Camryn, and Ms. Deambrosio have approached it with great enthusiasm. They all were very happy with where the club is now.

When asked where they would like to see the club in a year’s time, they all said that they are always looking for new members, and would love to have a bigger group of students participating. “So many have said they are interested, and just haven’t been able to make the time yet. We’d like to see the club grow so more people can learn from our special guests and the practices we do each time.” Camryn said.
