On Oct. 3-5, the New Canaan Domestic Violence Partnership (NCDVP) visited the cafeteria during lunch in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. NCDVP said that they hoped that their presence and resources will promote awareness among students.

According to Youth and Family Services Specialist Jacqueline D’Louhy, domestic violence can affect anyone and is mostly known for physical abuse. However, it is not limited to this. Other components of domestic violence can include emotional and sexual abuse, as well as the destruction of property. “We are trying to make a difference about a social and economic issue that touches the lives of millions of Americans everyday,” Ms. D’Louhy said.

Ms. D’Louhy also emphasized how domestic violence can take place in any area.“[The message is] dating violence and bullying occurs in every community regardless of size or demographic makeup,” she said.

During October, Ms. D’Louhy said that the NCDVP institutes many programs in the high school and middle school in an effort to raise awareness of the issue and to break the cycle. She said it is important for students to be educated on this issue now because they are starting to form relationships and make decisions on their own. “Teens in particular are at an increased risk for bullying especially because of all the different types of bullying seen these days,” Ms. D’Louhy said.

People afflicted by domestic violence are encouraged to call the New Canaan Police Department or the free and confidential DVCC hotline 1-888-774-2900 for help.
