This year brought a lot of new excitement to the squash teams’ season, as this was their first year playing as an official varsity sport for the high school. They ended their season with success, tying for first place with Greenwich High School in the Fairwest tournament at Chelsea Piers.

Junior captain Henry Greer was proud of the team’s performance and found it to be the best tournament they played in. “The season went really well this year as we got some great new players and we won the Fairwest Championships,” he said. “That was the highlight of the season since that was the only large tournament we had because Nationals got cancelled.”

The members of the team were pleased to finally have squash as a varsity sport, especially senior captain Aly Schmidt. “I am so proud of each and every player for sticking to the sport and making the program what it is today,” she said.

Aly provided some insight on some key players who contributed to the teams’ triumphant season this year. “We were lucky enough to have both the Bubrosky brothers join the team and Hal Holappa who are all great players. We really would not be where we are today without them.”

Sophomore Grayson Bubrosky played the number two spot on the court and even though he had a slow start due to an injury, he became an essential asset to the team as the season. “During the beginning of the year I was frustrated with my playing, as I had just returned from a four month long foot injury, forgetting my movement patterns and my stroke completely,” he said. “But as I kept pushing myself through the rough times, I believe that I played very well and am proud of the progress that I made.”

Despite their victory at the Fairwest tournament, the players were still disappointed when nationals were cancelled as they had put so much time and effort into preparing for it. However, Grayson believes that all of the training for nationals was what helped them win the Fairwest tournament. “We trained hard for nationals and all of this hard work paid off. We played the best squash of the year at this final tournament and left Chelsea Piers with a tied championship with Greenwich respectively. It was all worth it in the end,” he said.

Despite the fact that the squash team is losing several seniors next year, Henry is looking forward to the season and thinks the team will do just fine. “Next year the team will be even better because our young team will develop their squash skills more and get even better.”

Grayson also has a lot of faith in how the team will compete next year, even with the loss of a few seniors. “Our team will be just as good next year as it is now. We are a young team consisting of all sophomores and one junior. I am really looking forward to next season, and to hopefully win our division at next year’s nationals.”
