Girls Track

The girls track team finished their regular season on Tuesday, May 16, defeating rival Darien 91-54 to push their record to 6-0. The success of the girls’ regular season led them to finish top of the FCIAC East Division, putting them squarely in the mix to win the FCIAC tournament. This top placement in the East Division was due to two key victories against division opponents Fairfield Warde and Wilton in back to back weeks in early May.

Head Coach Jefferey Brenston is confident in his team’s ability to perform well in FCIACs because of the vast experience throughout the program. “We definitely have a lot of experience with throwing and our distance runners, they are our biggest strengths going into each meet,” Coach Brenston said. “You can always count on them to do really well and perform, so I am looking forward to seeing what they do in FCIACs and states.”

In FCIACs, Coach Brenston’s predictions came true as the girls placed second behind strong performances of their distance runners and throwers. Fairfield Ludlowe placed first in the meet, with 102.5 points compared to the Ram’s 88. Sophomore Charlotte Moore placed fourth in the 1600 meter and 3200 meter, in addition to freshman Eliana Savelli placing third in the 3200 meter. The story for the Rams, however, was the dominance in the throwing events, as senior Bella DeFelice and sophomore Lauren Smith medaled in all three events they participated in. Bella placed first in shot put and discus, as well as third in javelin. Lauren placed first in javelin, and second in shot put and discus.

Coach Brenston was happy with how the girls performed. “We did well in FCIACs behind great performances from our throwers,” he said. “We still have more goals to accomplish, though, and that begins with states.”

Lauren Smith and Bella DeFelice were recognized for their season-long success, being put on the All-FCIAC Girls Outdoor Track and Field team.

The CIAC Championship was more of the same for the girls, placing third behind Windsor and E.O. Smith. Charlotte Moor and Eliana Savelli took home second and third in the 3200m, and a third place finish in the 4×800 relay culminated a strong performance by the ram runners. In the throwing events, Bella DeFelice and Lauren Smith once again had strong showings. Bella placed first in discus and shot put, with Lauren placing first in Javelin.

Boys Track

The Boys Track team finished off their regular season by losing to rival Darien on Tuesday, May 16, dropping their record to 4-2. The team’s only losses on the season were to Darien and Fairfield Warde, who both finished ahead of the Rams in the FCIAC East Division.

Despite this third place finish, the team views the season in a positive light, and is ready for the postseason. “Two words to characterize our season would be different and improvement,” junior Michael Fico said. “Different because of a lot of new people needing to step into impactful roles and improvement because of the steps forward we have taken. We are ready for FCIACs and states, though, and I’m looking forward to seeing what we can do.”

Despite these aspirations, the boys placed ninth in the FCIAC Championship. Owen Lydon and Walter Schmitz took fourth and fifth in the discus finals, while Javier Perez-Soto placed second in Javelin.

“We know that we can do better and have our minds set on success in states,” Michael said. “We want our seniors to go out on a high note, and performing well in states is the way to do that.”
