A few years ago, squash was not even an official varsity sport at NCHS, but now, the girls are looking to prove themselves this season as they step out onto the courts this winter. Even though there is no full-time coach for

the team, junior co-captains Katie Conese and Tess Rosenberg, with the help of professionals at the New Canaan Country Club, are looking to guide the team to a victorious season filled with team bonding and skill improvement.

Despite squash’s recent inauguration as a varsity sport, Katie feels that the team is already more popular than it ever was as a club sport. “This year, we had the biggest turnout yet of new players from all different grades,” Katie said. “With the addition of so many skilled players joining the team, it will benefit us greatly and we will be able to play more competitively. Everybody is looking forward to furthering the bond with all of the teammates and hopefully having a successful season.”

Tess believes that the roles of key players Hailey Coutts and Sami Marcus will be tough to fill, but there are plenty of girls that are ready to step up to the challenge. “It’s definitely going to be a hard season without Hailey and Sami, since they started the team and a lot of the girls were really close with them,” Tess said. “They were both really important to my high school career and Katie and I want to be like that for the underclassman, so with new freshmen like Margaux Brennan, Liza Cuoco and Jenny Loomis, we have a great opportunity to get to know a whole new team. We want to be able to help each other elevate our game and try to keep an open environment where girls want to improve and feel happy about coming to play.”

While Katie and the rest of the team is looking forward to their major match-ups against rivals Darien and St. Luke’s, the Nationals tournament is the highlight of the season that the girls are looking forward to. “We go to Nationals in February at the end of the season, and it is where the team can really prove how far we have come,” Katie said. “It is a great chance to have some exposure to squash outside of Connecticut and it is a fun opportunity to meet other players from around the nation.”
