Liza Cuoco is the number one player on the girls squash team as a freshman. She also plays lacrosse and volleyball. She has been playing squash for five years starting at the YMCA and then playing at the Country Club of New Canaan

What is your pregame routine?

We play king of the court and stretch.

What does it feel like being part of a team made up of each grade, where there is no “real” coach?

We have to get our morale up ourselves. A lot of people including myself need a boost of self-esteem to give us more of a drive. The captains, Tess Rosenberg and Katie Conese, have to get everyone pumped up because we need to get everyone into the right mindset before a match. We don’t feel like we are the best, but we overcome it by working to make ourselves better and improving every day.

Do you have a source of inspiration, motivation, or a motto that you follow?

My coach is my motivation. I’ve had him for five years and he is number three in the world for doubles. I’ve seen him play and it’s amazing to watch. He makes it look so easy when it’s really hard. He really loves the sport and is really passionate about it.

What got you started on such an uncommon sport in NCHS?

My dad, in fourth grade, took me to the YMCA because he wanted to play squash with me there. We did it once and then I asked to do it again, and that’s when I started playing.

If you could play a match against anyone in the whole world, who would it be?

I played this girl three times last year, and I never beat her, so I would want to play her again. I almost beat her but then she hit me in the face with the ball and I lost.
