Athlete Profile: Julian Brawn

Senior offensive lineman Julian Brawn hopes to continue to be a strong presence on the field this season as he wraps up his high school football career.

Standing at six-foot three inches with a 14.5 shoe size, Julian towers over most of his competition as a right tackle on the offensive line. This advantage helped him excel at football. “My size helped a lot,” Julian said. “I was always the tallest kid. I played soccer and basketball for a long time, but football was always the sport I was best at and my favorite.”

Julian looks to his dad as an idol in the sport. “I’ve always tried to strive for what my Dad accomplished,” Julian said. “My Dad started playing football his junior year in high school and then played at Middlebury. I’ve always strived to at least get to his level.”

New Canaan’s high energy football encouraged him to switch from his small private school to the high school in his freshman year, in pursuit of following his father’s example.

“The camaraderie is the best part – just being with everyone,” Julian said. “Football allows us to build a special bond. We motivate each other, both in the weight room and on the field. It’s a sport that relies on everyone to do well.”

Sometimes that bond leads to post-football eats. “The offensive line and I always get food together after the games,” Julian said. “We always find different places. The most recent place was Tony’s. That’s probably the most common spot. When we go to the New Canaan Diner, we all get pancakes.”

Over the summer, Julian verbally committed to continue playing football at Bowdoin college in Brunswick, Maine. “I really liked the Bowdoin coaching staff,” Julian said. “They are a young staff so they implement a newer style of coaching, which appealed to me. It felt more like family there.”

Committed to the team and the game, Julian enters his final high school season focusing on a clean game. “We have a special group this year,” he said. “For the offensive line my goal is to have no penalties or sacks and play the game as best we can, ” he said.
