When Colton Burpo was rushed to the emergency room in March, 2003, no one thought he would make it. Just shy of four years old, the little boy made an astounding recovery from a burst appendix. But what his family really didn’t expect was the tale that unfolded in the following years, an extraordinary story of Colton’s visit to heaven and back.

In Imperial, Nebraska, a small town of under 2,000, Colton claims to have left his body during emergency surgery and gone to heaven where he sat in Jesus’s lap. With the sweet innocence of a child, Colton told his mommy that the hospital was where the angels sang to him. His story was verified by his knowledge of exactly where his parents were during his surgery. He also was able to talk about long-lost family members that had passed away before he was born. As time went on, Colton wouldn’t let his parents forget their belief that God really loves his children, as he repeated it many times in his very solemn four-year-old voice.

Colton’s father Todd, the author of Heaven Is For Real, is a pastor and was astounded by the way his little son’s detailed portrayal of heaven match scripture in every way. Colton, who is now eleven and was interviewed on the Today Show (see the video below) last week, told the world that he wants everyone to know that heaven really is for real.

From all the attention he is receiving via television and web, it isn’t a surprise that the book made the best-seller list this year. Cute little Colton paints a breathtaking picture of a place where no one gets old, it never gets dark and there are thousands of unknown, beautiful colors that decorate the sky. He also told of many animals in heaven and how people flew everywhere instead of walking.

But this remarkable aspect to Colton’s life hasn’t stopped him from being a normal kid. Aside from his recent visit to the Today Show, Colton is now just your average eleven-year-old. The public has had many differing opinions on  Colton’s claims, and there is just as much skepticism as there is support for Colton. But whether you believe him or not, Heaven Is For Real is a book worth reading.
