It’s that time of year again when the Student Coalition, in conjunction with Charity Links, does its annual holiday drive, Toys for Tots, which goes until December 12. All toys donated should be new, unwrapped, and appropriate for children between 6 months and 12 years old. Students and staff are encouraged to make donations through My School Bucks, and purchased gifts may either be placed in the boxes near the main office or dropped off to any Student Coalition Advisor — Mr. Doyle, Ms. Astacio, Mr. Killelea, Ms. Fitzpatrick, Ms. DiGioia, Ms. Cullen, Mr. LeDuc, Mr. Staffaroni, Ms. Schaedler or Ms. Schulz.
Toys for Tots is a program run by the United States Marine Corps Reserve that gives toys to children whose parents cannot afford to buy them gifts for the holiday season. Student Coalition Advisor, Priscilla Schulz said, “It’s been an organization that they have been doing for a very long time. It has been a tradition for our school that around Christmas we put our time into this organization.”
This annual tradition has been a considerable part of the community because it gives students and staff a chance to give back and show gratitude. “We have a school community full of kindness and this is just one small piece of it,” Student Coalition Advisor, William Doyle, said.
The drive is an opportunity to help children less fortunate throughout the United States experience the joys of Christmas. “Being able to have school-wide participation in service helps bring the NCHS community together,” Class of 2023 Student Coalition President, Addie Cannon, said. “Helping make Christmas special for these kids is super important to me.”
Last year, the Student Coalition raised over 2000 dollars, and this year’s goal is set even higher. On the last day of the drive, senior members of the Student Coalition will use the money they have collected from the donations to go shopping for toys and will add them with those already donated.
