The National Honor Society (NHS) was created March 1, 1921 as a nationwide organization in the United States consisting of many high school chapters. The National Association of Secondary Schools officially established the NHS in 1921 under the leadership of Dr. Edward Rynearson. By 1930 there were over 1,000 chapters in the US. The organization takes part in active service at school and within the community. The National Honor Society recognizes outstanding high school students based on scholarship, leadership, character, and service. This criteria is used to select new members of the NHS across the country. The purpose of the NHS is to foster community service, promote leadership within students, stimulate scholarship, and develop students’ character.

The Class of 2018 Honors Society regularly meets in faculty advisor Roger Hansell's room.

The selection process for all NHS chapters, including New Canaan High School, involves a faculty council to evaluate applicants eligibility to be a member of NHS. The first requirement for membership is a grade point average above a 92%. After the students pass this test, an application is sent out to these students in order for them to be considered. The application evaluates their leadership, service, and character. Once selected, members participate in activities within their chapter and have the ability to make a significant contribution to their community. Each chapter selects their own representatives to run their chapter of the National Honor Society. The NHS New Canaan Chapter for the Class of 2015 has selected Ted O’Rourke as President, Peter Katz as Vice President, Ann B as Treasury, Jake Morris as Secretary, and Isabel Taben as Program Coordinator. Each position has its own responsibilities to help the NHS to function to its maximum capabilities within our community.

Today there are over one million students in the National Honor Society across the country. Forty students at New Canaan High School, Class of 2015, have been selected to participate in this prestigious organization.
