The internet’s satirical responses to arming teachers in America

The most recent school shooting took the lives of 17 children from Florida’s Stoneman Douglas High School and ushered the March 14 school walkout in which thousands of teenagers across America took part in. The difference from these victims to ones of other school shootings is the passion each student possess in making sure their school was the last one to face these security failures. From meeting with Donald Trump to Marco Rubio on national television, these young activists have approached gun control with rigor and force, especially when confronting arming teachers. First proposed by Trump, this suggestion faced immense criticism.

After the immediate reactions of concern and astonishment, the internet took control.  This promptly elicited a satirical outcry on social medias, poking fun at the outlandish idea of learning in a classroom with a handgun attached to your math teachers hip. These ironic comments have no means of trivializing the severity and sensitivity of school shootings, but instead try to reflect the absurdities of arming teachers. These mocking responses follow the young generation’s reactions to major news –memes. While the intense atmosphere of student activists challenging outdated legislation is revolutionary and serious, there are some people who would like to lessen the pressure and make light of the situation. Here are my favorite memes ridiculing the idea of prison-izing public schools.
