Ready, set, go: Dressing well in 10 minutes or less

Kelly Saiz

Truth be told, the best way to put together an outfit is the night before the event (school). But, really, between English papers, sports, theater, video chats, all-important facebook communication, and meals, how many of us can afford the luxury of pre-gaming our outfit choices?

So when the alarm goes off 40 minutes later than you thought you set it last night, try to think about these guidelines for a quick look:

1. Have a good, old standby.

If this means jeans and a sweatshirt for you, so be it! It’s your life. If you want to try something else, consider the following. Go into your closet and find an article of clothing that you love for its uniqueness. Pair this piece with something simple that lets it shine. Simply allow your other clothes to compliment it.

2. Solid black and white is your home.

These colors are the epitome of timeless dressing (shout out to Coco Chanel and Karl Lagerfeld!). In the ten-minute morning rush, grab a black or white shirt (a simple Hanes T works!), a pair of dark wash jeans, and then find one bright color (kudos to anyone who chooses red or yellow here) in the form of a single item (bracelet, sweater, belt, shoes, headband, etc).  Throw it all together and you will project simple and stylish dressing.

3. Start from the ground, up, but keep footwear for last.

Why? Whether you’ve decided on pants, shorts, or a skirt, picking the right top will be easier if you have already chosen the grounding basis of your outfit.

4. Know your best silhouette.

This is not the time to experiment with proportions. Knowing your body is the key to dressing the right way.  Visualizing an outfit from top to bottom is essential in strong aesthetic appearance. When the clock is ticking, keep the layers minimal and be modest.

5. Use your imagination.

Don’t tell yourself, “I have nothing to wear.” Because you do. Turn a scarf into cool headgear. Steal one of Dad’s old sweaters and wear it over leggings. Try just one interesting piece of jewelry instead of half a dozen. Embrace your closet!
