Rams weekly update 10/28

Football

Boys football added another win to their resume last Friday, October 21, defeating previously 5-1 Wilton in blowout fashion, 45-0. The emphatic win pushed the team to a perfect 6-0 record behind three straight shutouts by the defense.

After the first few minutes of the game, the Rams had a 7-0 lead, but Wilton was creeping into Ram’s territory, and the game seemed destined for a nail-biting end. However, things quickly changed, as senior Tucker Milligan intercepted the ball and returned it 99 yards, a new school record, the other way for an NC score. Defensive coordinator Chris Silvestri said, “To be able to see that we had our back up against the wall and that you can make plays gave our kids confidence going forward.” New Canaan never looked back, finishing with 45 points including three touchdowns from the defense.

Coach Silvestri and the team now turn their focus to the 5-1 St Joe’s, who should provide a good challenge. “It’s a new opponent, new week. We have to take what we did well, grow with it, and forget about Wilton,” said Coach Silvestri in preparation for the upcoming game.

Girls Cross Country

Girls cross country was 17-0 going into FCIACs last week. However, they took second place in a narrow three point loss and are prepared to come back. Junior runner Benjamin Skrelunas said, “The girls team is absolutely cracked this year! They are taking it all no doubt. I’ve seen them practice, they’re out for blood.” States will take place on October 29, so make sure to show your support to the girls.

Boys Cross Country

After finishing in eighth place for FCIACs, boys cross country looks to come back in the state championship. Sophomore Spencer Paine said, “I think that the team has the potential to make it to state opens [after the state championship]as long as everyone runs their smartest race.” To qualify for state opens and continue their season, the boys must perform well during states on Saturday October 29.

Boys Soccer

This week, the boys soccer team won their final regular season game against Westhill. This win Rams sent them to FCIACs, while a loss would have knocked them out. A great match ended in dramatic fashion when Westhills striker ripped a ball that bounced off the post with just seconds remaining in the game.

After the big 2-1 win, senior captain Robbie Hellmann said, “We’re winning it all, there is no way around it.” The boys head to Norwalk on October 27 where they hope to get one step closer to that FCIAC championship.

Girls Soccer

The girls soccer season officially came to a close this week, finishing with a record of 4-9-2. The girls did not qualify for FCIACs nor states, but hope that they can take their two won games at the end of the season as momentum going into next season.

After the 7-0 win against Norwalk and 4-1 win against Westhill this past week, Coach Rich Hickson said, “The girls finished the season strong, next year we will be back.” Despite a premature exit, the girls will be back with vengeance come next fall.
