One of the lesser-known jewels in discography of the Counting Crows is It’s Raining Baltimore. Eternally famous for the upbeat Accidentally in Love, yes, the song from Shrek, It’s Raining in Baltimore is a peaceful and mellow song that doesn’t have much of a goal. From the 1993 album (the year I was born…) August and Everything that was the fastest selling album after Nirvanna’s Nevermind since the success of the single Mr. Jones. With lines like “And I get no answers and I don’t get no change It’s raining in Baltimore, baby but everything else is the same. There are things I remember and things I forget, I miss you I guess that I should” set me thinking about life. But then there’s the beautiful crooning of “I need a phone call, I need a raincoat, I need a big love, I need a phone call”. The sweet simplicity of writing about thoughts in the rain makes for music that makes any sane person stop and listen, even if just for a second.
