CAPT Week Schedule

The Connecticut Academic Performance Tests, or CAPTs, begin Friday, Mar. 4 and will continue through Monday, Mar. 14. Every year, these tests are administrated by the Connecticut State Board of Education and are proctored to students in their sophomore year. If the school’s goal is not met, students in their sophomores are given the chance to retest as juniors.

Signups for AP tests began Monday, Feb. 28 in the College and Career Center and continue through Friday, Mar. 4. Registration requires a check of $95 per test made out to “NCHS Guidance.”

Students taking AP courses benefit from taking AP exams. “It would be in a student’s best interest to take the exam[s] because if they don’t, they won’t receive the weighted [course] grade on their transcript,” Sue Carroll, Coordinator of the College and Career Center, said.

In towns such as New Canaan, Darien, and Greenwich, teens feel pressured to receive top marks throughout high school and immediately proceed to elite universities. Whether it be work-overload, homesickness, or general irresponsibility, many students fail to resolve early problems they develop, and one in every four college students drop out before they have completed their freshman year (American College Testing).

AP Night was scheduled to be held on Thursday, Feb.3, at 7:00pm, however it was moved to Thursday the Feb. 10 due to the weather. AP night addressed the expectations for the honors and AP classes offered at the high school. Assistant principal Dawn Bartz began AP Night four years ago, enabling students and their parents to understand the variety of classes offered at NCHS.
