Senior tri-captains Alex Ellsworth, Spencer Lyman and Steven Singer have been passed the baton and are looking to lead this year’s indoor track team to victory. Last winter, the boys placed eighth in the FCIAC and sixth in the Class L State Championships.
The three captains know that this season may be particularly challenging after losing five vital teammates from last year, including Austen Deery and Ish Farooqui. However, they know that if the team focuses on improving specific aspects of their game, then they may have a legitimate chance at victory. “We need the most improvement in our aggressiveness during competition,” Spencer said. “We need to believe in ourselves more and not be afraid to put everything on the line.”
The team has been working hard even since before the season’s official start on December 1. “Many of the guys were running after school and joining in on workouts,” Alex said. “They were all optional and entirely voluntary, but we have a dedicated group that wants to succeed at the highest level possible.”
As for this year’s FCIAC and State Championships, the boys track team’s top priority is to make it on the podium as a team. The tri-captains believe that their time to be champions is going to come soon. “This team has gone through a few rebuilding years recently, but now we are definitely turning the page into becoming contenders for the FCIAC and State Championships in multiple events,” Steven said. “I think every group has room for improvement, but I’m sure we will improve together as a team.”
The boys’ first meet is Saturday, December 20 at 10 am at Staples.
