Coming off a six game losing streak, the boys’ varsity basketball team pulled through on Senior Night, 68-54, advancing to 6-11 in the FCIAC, and 7-12 overall. The Rams played the Danbury Hatters who are 5-13 in the FCIAC and 5-15 overall yesterday at 7:00 pm.
Perhaps because it was the last regular season home game for the seniors, the Rams came to win. Junior Chris Rama led the scoring with 20 points, while seniors Connor House, Nick Larson, Michael Freyre, and Ian Knechtle had 16, 9, 9, and 8 points respectively.
This game was also significant for Knechtle because at one point, he was just two points away from a triple double (10 rebounds, assists, and points) and came one point away from his 500th point as a Ram.
For the entire first half, the game was even, with the score never wavering more than 5 points in either direction. Freyre jumpstarted the game by leading the offense, helping teammates to make a mad dash to the basket. At the end of the first quarter the Rams were up 14-12.
Continuing into the second quarter the Rams made a number of shots. Larson hit a three- pointer, increasing the lead by 5 points for a 23-18 score. Freyre also contributed on defense with a block and a steal. The half came to a close 29-28 Rams.
The third quarter started out slow and neither team dominated right off the bat, and the score was tied several times. It wasn’t until the fourth quarter that the Rams succeeded in pulling away from the Hatters. The Rams managed a 14-point lead and closed the game with a final score of 68-54.
The team did not make the top 8 for FCIACs and will be fighting for a spot in States this Wednesday against Bassick, at Bassick at 7:00 pm. Bassick is 12-5 in the FCIAC and will make for strong competition for the Rams.
