Freshman year: filled with mask-wearing, hybrid learning, and Lab 119’s carpeted floors.

As Journalism 1 students who spent half of our classes on Zoom and section meeting breakout rooms, learning to produce work to the Courant standard was no easy task. After all, we didn’t know how to fabricate the perfect news lead, let alone what an Oxford comma was. Videos, however, seemed to make the learning process more interactive. Through video, we had insight into the lives of others, even when in-person connection wasn’t viable.

As members of the same cohort and two of the few freshmen in the class, we often collaborated and connected through production. Ultimately, as our friendship blossomed, we discovered we shared the same passion for Trader Joe’s snacks and trying new recipes.

Check out the video below for the first installment of our cookbook series, recorded January 17, 2021. For whatever reason, we never got around to posting it – here we are, a few years late, still thinking about more Trader Joe’s recipes to test out together.

Throughout our time in Lab 119, we’ve watched videos that have become invaluable to our production process. Three years later, we are endlessly grateful to have a keyhole into our own lives in the form of a digital time capsule.
