Students and faculty approve of AP testing/weighted grade policy

There are many AP courses offered at the high school ranging from AP Music Theory to AP Physics. Each May, AP tests are offered by the College Board to students taking these courses. Prior to this year, students were strongly encouraged yet not forced by their teachers to take the classes respective AP test. However, at the beginning of this school year the administration implemented a policy stating that in order to receive the honors weighting that comes with taking an AP class, all students must register for an AP test through the school at a fee of $95 per test.

In January 2009 a committee of faculty members presented a solution to the Board of Education to address the large number of students who take AP courses but not the AP test…

Nor’easter wreaks havoc

April showers have yet to begin, but the March nor’easter brought high winds and plenty of rain this past weekend. New Canaan was declared ‘in a State of Emergency’ on Sunday, and the havoc is still on our streets.

The tree damage has been devastating in most areas. Colin Brown, an Environmental Educator at the New Canaan Nature Center, has been living on site for a year and a half at the Center and has never seen this kind of devastation there. “Around 15 to 20 trees probably fell; six or seven trees blocked the trails,” Mr. Brown said. “The rain wasn’t that bad, it was a normal March or April rain, but the wind was very strong…”

Boys ice hockey beats St. Joe’s Cadets 4-3

Last night in front of a packed house at Terry Connors Ice Rink, the boys’ ice hockey team won an overtime thriller in their FCIAC semifinal matchup against the St. Joseph Cadets with a score of 4-3. With 3:06 remaining in the 15 minutes of overtime, sophomore defenseman Ryan Begoon’s wrist shot, opened up by a cross-zone pass by senior captain forward Andrew Leslie, whooshed by St Joseph goalie Zach Carrano during a Ram’s powerplay for the game-winning goal. Bussey’s Bomb Squad stormed the ice…

Boys’ hockey team shuts out rival Darien, 4-0

Yesterday, the Rams hockey team defeated long time FCIAC arch-rival Darien with a score of 4-0 in front of a full crowd at Darien Ice Rink. The Rams took a 1-0 lead in the first period on a goal from senior and captain forward Sam Stanton and never looked back, scoring twice in the 2nd period and again in the 3rd to seal the victory. On December 26th, the boys hockey team defeated the Blue Wave in one of the most exciting New Canaan vs. Darien hockey games in history, score 2-1.

The Blue Wave, looking for revenge from their earlier loss to the Rams, came out strong and put the pressure on the Rams, but the Rams defense and freshman goalie Tim Nowacki, who accounted for 19 saves and another shutout, stood strong and kept the Wave of the scoreboard…
