Do you ever get bored walking through the cell-block-lined hallways day after day, with nothing to look at but the occasional art piece or flyer? Have you ever been interested in something, for example, the student art exhibit, and wish you could know more about the work that went into creating it? Take a second to breathe, before you have a nervous breakdown about the impending midterms, and check out the Aurasma app. Aurasma has the potential to not only provide more information for notices and student work, but to, cue the futuristic music: make the 2-D come to life.

The purpose of the Aurasma app is to create an augmented reality. People can make trigger images, photos that set off the app, and overlay the selected image with a video or link with more information to widen the viewer’s understanding. For example, a student could take a photo of their own artwork on display, make it a trigger image, and then overlay a video of them working on the piece or explaining the process. Then students who pass the artwork can pull out their Aurasma apps, highlight the artwork with their phone cameras, and click to see the overlayed video.

Assistant librarian, senior George Herde, has some cool ideas on how the app can be used by students. “The student body can use the app in order to create posters for their clubs or events, it would allow them to put much more information than what an 8.5 by 11 sheet of paper usually allows,” he said. “The app could also be used to make poster boards more interactive, on a teacher and student basis, by involving videos, slideshows, more pictures, or even 3D projections and animations.”

You can download Aurasma for free on Google play or the App Store.
