Last Night, Thursday, Apr. 26 student poets, teachers and parents came together for an evening of original poetry readings. The four winners were junior Annie Conover for best poem “Letters Home from Baghdad”, sophomore Tyler Kendall for best imagery in “Grandfather”, senior Jenny Curt for best performance, and senior Olivia Marcus for most artful use of language in an untitled poem.

After coaching at NCHS for 21 years, Gail Overbeck recently gave news of her retirement from the position of head coach for the girls’ varsity tennis team. Ms. Overbeck originally started coaching at the high school in 1991.

On Mar. 19, after a national search, Chair of the New Canaan Board of Education Hazel Hobbs announced the unanimous selection of Dr. Mary Kolek as the new Superintendent of the New Canaan Public Schools (NCPS). Effective July 1, Dr. Kolek will be the first female superintendent for this district.

In order to draw attention to the revised Core Values, Beliefs and Learning Expectations poster, the library designed a contest in which participants must identify the 14 students and 10 faculty members depicted on the poster. This contest, open to both students and staff, will end Apr. 30 and all submissions with the 24 correct identities will then be entered into a raffle for a $50 Amazon gift certificate. A form to fill out the answers is located on the library’s homepage.

It’s a widespread assumption that anyone born in, or before, the 50’s or early 60’s cannot even fathom the grandeur of modern technology. Texting, tweeting, tumblr-ing, instagraming, it all seems lost on their aged minds. However this stereotype is perhaps less influenced by reality, and more a reflection of how a younger generation wishes to preserve their childhood.
