There are many opportunities for students to spend parts of the school year or summer abroad.  Through programs like Rustic Pathways and pre-college programs hosted at universities like Brown, students can travel to exotic locations or take college courses. “Taking college courses helps students understand the college experience,” College and Career Center coordinator Susan Carroll said. “They get to eat college food, take college classes, sleep in college dorms and learn from college professors.”

While summer programs are popular, only a small portion of students choose to spend part of the regular school year abroad. Programs such as School Year Abroad allows students to spend a school year in a different country.  “School Year Abroad is an old, established program, tried and true,” Ms. Carroll said.  “However, only one or two students choose to study abroad per grade even though it is a very interesting experience for the students.”

For students interested in spending part of the summer or school year away from New Canaan, Ms. Carroll in the College and Career Center can help find the perfect program. Additionally, be sure to check out the bulletin boards outside of the College and Career Center to see some of the options for study abroad and summer programs. Some of the programs will also be visiting NCHS during lunch block in the lounge.  “When the programs visit the school be sure to ask the representatives a variety of questions to ensure the program is a good fit,” Ms. Carroll said.  “It is important to find a program that is the right fit for you because those weeks or months you spend abroad can be the most memorable in your life.”
