The air is getting chilly, Mariah Carey has defrosted, and it is starting to feel like the holiday season. As school rigor starts to wane and we finish up the last bit of tests, what can we do to fill up all this extra time?
If we can learn anything from Elf, Miracle on 34th Street, and Home Alone 2, nothing is more festive than New York City in December. Here are my top three things to do in the city during the holiday season:
First stop is the Radio City Music Hall to admire the Rockettes. In recent years, new costumes, new music, and more advanced technology have been featured, but don’t fret because the iconic Santa Claus, wooden soldiers, and talented dancers remain.
Next is to take a trip down Gingerbread Lane, a delicious community made by Jon Lovitch, who holds the world record for the largest gingerbread village. Lovitch’s whimsical creation finds home inside The Shops at Columbus Circle, where you can admire the sugary details up close. The sweet sensation is composed of 780 gingerbread structures, 700 egg whites, 1,920 pounds of icing, 520 square feet of gingerbread, and many more materials in addition to over 800 hours of work. Although not allowed to be eaten, visitors surely have feasted their eyes on the display.
Next is Rockefeller Center for some ice skating. Even though ice skating is not my strong suit, I love it nonetheless. After the iconic Tree Lighting Ceremony on December 4th, the 74 feet tall Norway Spruce radiates a warm glow. The lines are long, but the surreal experience on the ice makes the wait worth it.
The holidays are a time to spend with family and friends, and what is a better way to celebrate than taking an exciting day trip to the city.
