Over the years, hockey has experimented with its formula to keep up with the times. For instance, there is the new trend in alternate jerseys. Some are good, some bad, and some should be burned. The NHL has also toyed around with overtime. Shootouts were first implemented in the ’05-’06 season, and though there have been some gems, I have to say that it is a failed experiment. But out of all the poking and prodding of the NHL blueprint, something truly amazing emerged.
On Jan. 1, 2008, Ralph Wilson Stadium hosted the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Buffalo Sabres to the first ever Winter Classic. And oh what a classic it was! Everything went so well that I am suspicious of its authenticity. Surely the NHL planned it to snow, and bribed the refs to ensure an overtime and shootout. After I had recovered from all the excitement, I already began to think who would play next.
The Red Wings and Blackhawks followed, and then the Bruins and Flyers. Jan. 1 is quickly approaching, and the Winter Classic looms. This time it’s between the Washington Capitals and the Pittsburgh Penguins. Though the match-up doesn’t win any surprises for creativity (Sid vs. Ovechkin…what a surprise!), it is destined to be the best Winter Classic ever. What makes this one so special? The NHL is teaming up with HBO to do a four-part documentary on the preparation for the big game. In addition to some insight into what goes into the Winter Classic, I’m hoping that Sidney Crosby cusses as much as Rex Ryan on ‘Hard Knocks’.
I know after the game has been played I’ll start counting down the days to the next Winter Classic; though I’ll make sure not to hold my breath for a Ducks/Kings SoCal showdown.
On a final note, I’d like to make a suggestion to the New Canaan Athletics Department. If the NHL can have a Winter Classic, why can’t we? Imagine an annual outdoors match-up (perhaps at the Winter Club) between the Rams and the Blue Wave. I cannot think of a better way to honor the sport and the great rivalry.
