Recently I have been reading short stories because I wanted to switch up my reading material during the quarantine. Instead of reading the same old books in the romance/comedy genre, I read a book my grandfather recommended to me. He is obsessed with short stories and has been trying to get me interested in them for a long time now.
It is called Foster by Claire Keegan. She is an Irish author and tries to make sure the short stories she writes captures a piece of her soul in them. The book Foster did win an award back in 2009 and an audio version was made in 2015 where it was then read aloud by actress Evanna Lynch on BBC’s radio.
This delightful read is about a young girl who lives on a farm with her new foster parents in Ireland. She is not familiar with the word love and all the things that come with it. As she grows closer with her foster parents she is introduced to this new feeling and in the mists of all of that, a secret that was meant to be kept hidden. She then discovers that she isn’t as tough as she may seem.
This book is a great read and would definitely recommend it if you’re into books like The Outsiders or To Kill a Mockingbird. I love Foster because it follows the journey of this young girl who is new to the way things work in life. She faces troubles, worries, and doubts and has to find a meaning to all of it. In today’s society, we all don’t take the time to look at things with a different view or perspective to get a new insight. This captivating book shows you that everything you face in life is just another step towards discovering the person you are.
