Presidential Debate Preview I

This coming Wednesday the first Presidential Debate will be held at the University of Denver. It focuses on domestic policy and it will be an extremely important event in the election. It is no secret that President Obama holds a significant lead against Governor Romney in both the popular vote and the electoral college. This is a make-or-break moment for both the Obama and Romney campaigns. Elections can easily be decided in one debate – Reagan’s 1980 victory has been credited to his superb debate performance against Carter – and both campaigns are very aware of this. Here are a couple of things each of the candidates needs to accomplish:

On the heels of a successful Republican National Convention, a looming jobs report, and an economy that is still deeply suffering, Democrats were put in the spotlight to throw a convention miracle. The stakes were high: Barack Obama had to convince the American people to give him four more years to put the economy on track. Without a doubt, this convention met and exceeded expectations with its line-up of effective prime-time speakers. Could this be the turning point of the election?

How Romney Can Win The Election

Its official: the presidential race is all tied up. Recent polls have put President Obama and Governor Romney in a tight race, with polls showing their leads within the margin of error or tied. However, even though the popular vote is extremely tight, the electoral college map at this point heavily favors President Obama. If the election was held today, Obama would win the electoral college 294 to Governor Romney’s 244.

I Didn’t Vote Today! Why Students Don’t Care About The Election

On April 24 the republican presidential candidates courted the vote of students when Connecticut hosted its round of the Republican Presidential Primaries. However, turnout for the primaries in New Canaan was extremely low, clocking in at only 13 percent. These numbers suggests little interest in the primaries, let alone the presidential race as a whole. So the question arises, do students in the high school care about this election?

Who should really control the birth control debate?

Ever since the Obama administration announced that under the Affordable Care Act, the no-cost birth control policy would go into effect, intense debates and controversy have been stirring up. GOP members are up in arms, saying contraception coverage goes against the right to religious freedom. But what about the rights of women to affordable health care? Although these religious organizations say they are against contraception, the fact is, surveys show that 98% of catholic women have used birth control at some point during their lives. So by not covering birth control, religious organizations are denying a poor woman’s right to choose to use it or not. Some may be fortunate enough to still be able to make that decision. But for others, paying $100 a month for birth control may not be an option.
