In order to showcase the multitude of art that students produced while on break, the NCHS Gallery Committee put together the annual Summer Art Gallery, which premiered at 6 30 p.m. on September 11th. The show displays a variety of visual art collections and pieces.
Senior Daniela Villa created a piece for her 2D design foundations course project while attending Rhode Island School of Design’s Pre-College Program this summer. “There are two black and white pattern designs that I created with silhouettes of organic and industrial material that were inspired by the themes of the organic and natural compared to the industrial and mechanical,” she said.
Many students appreciate the school’s opportunities to show off their work, including the Summer Art Gallery. “It is very rewarding when people stop and stare and compliment your work,” Daniela said. “The gallery as a whole also brightens up the school hallways a bit, which can be greatly appreciated once in a while.”
Junior illustrator Paige Meintzer also believes that this gallery showcases the summer creations of both dedicated and more recreational artists. “I’m grateful because I am typically more concerned with academics during the year, so it’s nice to be able to have people see my drawing,” she said.
As an active member of Art Club, Daniela spends time with fellow artists in the school and encourages peers to attend the gallery. “The students displaying their work usually have passion for what they do and hopefully other students can learn to appreciate the hard work that they put in,” she said. “The gallery helps represent and showcase time well spent by artistic and creative students during the summer.”
Junior Sara Brindisi is displaying a drawing she made of ballet slippers because it exemplifies valuable techniques she learned. “I had to work with many shades of one color which was a challenge but it was also really fun,” she said. “I also wanted to try a new technique of using a marker for the bottom layer and then slowly building up using colored pencil to give it more depth.”
Art teacher Ms. Sinski believes the show believes the show has a wonderful collection of work from students and faculty. “There are collections from three students who were granted summer scholarships and studied at various fine arts programs,” she said. “There’s a wide variety of paintings, drawings, digital media and three exceptional films.”
