Although it’s winter and there is still an expectation of snow, spring is slowly seeping into my everyday wardrobe. I can’t help it—I cannot stand the bland, depressing colors and fabrics many choose to wear every winter season. For those of you who actually rebel against this invisible style guideline and sport fun, bright pieces and not-very-practical frilly ensembles, then you’re one step ahead of the style bandwagon.
The trends being seen on runways and sidewalks alike this season are the use of incorporating frills, bows, florals, and edgy pieces in everyday outfits. Although Betsey Johnson isn’t the most practical of beings, she shows that girly and edgy can definitely be the best of friends. In her Spring 2010 collection, Betsey Johnson takes dark, edgy, winter colors and pairs them with ruffles galore. This combination of fun and edge creates the perfect spring transition outfits.
Here are a few suggestions on how you can achieve this look with selected pieces from Free People:
1) Pair a floral dress with tights and flats (or with the perfect slouchy boots). This outfit can be dressed up or down and is winter and spring friendly. If it’s cold, add a cardigan.
2) Ruffled high waist skirts are really fun to wear, but make sure not to overwhelm the outfit with a too tight or too loose top. These look great with leggings and even better with tights.
3) Jeans. Jeans. Jeans. Keeping it simple, pair your jeans with a lacey top, cardigan, and black leather boots.
4) Remember not to wear too many trendy pieces all at once. You’ll look like you are trying to hard – which is not the idea. Keep in mind that one piece of trendy clothing can make the entire outfit complete.
