On Saturday March 13th, heavy rain and gale-force winds swept through New Canaan, causing widespread damage. The town has almost finished picking up fallen trees and broken electricity cables, but there is one effect that is going to linger until June. Because the district was forced to cancel school for three days, from March 15-18, these days will now have to be made up at the end of the year.
According to an email sent from Mr. Pavia to all students, the last day of school is now Thursday, June 24th, barring any more closures. The Board of Education will set the graduation date at its meeting on April 15th, but the ceremony is likely to occur on Wednesday, June 23rd, assuming once again, that there are no more school cancellations.
These changes to the calendar have caused problems for some students. Sophomore Maggie O’Rourke’s family was planning to go to Italy right after school ended. “Since school was ending on June 21st, I was only going to have to take two exams early,” Maggie said. “Now, since the storm has pushed back the end of school to the 24th, if I left on the 17th I would miss all of my exams. My family is being forced to rebook all of our flights and hotels.”
In addition, the days off from school caused problems for students and teachers in AP classes. Many teachers have planned out an exact schedule up until the date of the AP tests, and the three missed days threw a wrench into their plans.
Junior Jake Hennessey takes AP United States History, and he has felt the effects of the break. “Next week (March 22-26), we have like two weeks worth of tests in one,” Jake said. “It’s not like we missed a month, but I may have to ramp it up in May.”
While many students enjoyed their unexpected break, many also don’t like delaying the end of school. “As of right now, I think [the days off]were worth it, but I know that when June comes around, I will have a different opinion,” senior Hannah Singer said.
“Since we just came off CAPT week, we basically just had a break,” Jake said, “so I wish that we had school [all last week]and summer came earlier.”
