Coming off a 15-7 season that ended in a loss to rival Wilton in the state championship, the girls are primed for another strong season. Having lost only three players due to graduation, the returning talent is looking to make their mark.
This year’s team, led by senior captains Emily DeTour, Elizabeth Miller, and Isabel Taben, has high hopes for the coming season. “This year our goals are to win FCIACs, states, and to go undefeated,” Isabel said. “As a team we understand these are very big goals. In order to achieve these goals we need to come together as a team and be a cohesive unit.”
The team has a large number of returning players who hope to contribute to the team’s success. This includes seniors Maddie Gertsen, Matty Novick and Bailey Pilder, along with junior contributors Catherine Granito, Sami Stewart, Mia Carroll and Katie DeMarino. “We have 17 upperclassmen on our team and many returners,” Isabel said. “We lost only one starter last year, so our team has a lot of experience. We also have a lot of skill as individuals so we hope to work together as a team to be successful.”
Coupled with a usually strong FCIAC schedule, the girls face a tougher road this season with the addition of strong non-conference opponents. “We have a tougher schedule this year than last because we have added some more challenging opponents like Yorktown and Mt Sinai,” Elizabeth said.
Despite these challenges, the team’s outlook remains positive. “My goal for this team this season is consistency,” head coach Kristin Woods said. “We have a lot of potential and talent, but we need to play together 100% of the games. The girls have worked hard in the off-season to become strong individual players. I am excited to see how we can come together as a team.”
The girls open their season with a play day at Wilton on March 28th.
