Girls Lacrosse

With the girls lacrosse team heading into their last few games before FCIAC’s, they finished their run with a 12-4 record, beating key teams such as Wilton and Ridgefield, but dropping the ball to teams like Darien and Longmeadow.

Leading the team this year are senior co-captains Karlie Bucci, Julia Ozimek, Leigh Charlton and Braeden Dial. With Karlie, Julia, and Braeden heading to D1 colleges to continue playing lacrosse.  

The key players that stepped up and scored some nice shots this season are juniors Lauren Bisceglia, Liza Cuoco, sophomores Jane Charlton, Kearney McKiernan, and freshman McKenna Harden.

Harden has already made her name known by scoring three goals against Yorktown and one against Wilton.

Defensively the team is strong with seniors Julia Ozimek, Leigh Charlton and junior Caroline Schuh.

Our players definitely have the stick skills and confidence to execute” said co-captain Julia Ozimek. The girls look to build their record heading into FCIAC’s.

 

Boys Lacrosse

This season the New Canaan boys lacrosse team is coming off a stellar 2017 season of 16-7 and winning the Class M State Championships along with being ranked 2nd in the state.

They lost key players such as Ryan O’Connell to University of North Carolina, Drew Morris to University of Maryland and Jackson Appelt to University of Virginia, who continued the sport in college.

With new senior co-captains Mac Deane, Chase Strupp, Nick Crovatto and Ben Connelly, the boys are 11-5 and are looking forward to improving as play offs come around.

On offence the team has senior co-captains Mac and Ben, junior Teddy Mangus, sophomores Liam Griffiths and Drew Guida.

At midfield are senior Owen Shin, juniors Matt Cosco and Quintin O’Connell, and freshmen Chris Canet and Ryan Caione. Along with them at long stick middie are seniors Cole Kammerer and TJ Richardson.

Senior co-captain Mac says they are focusing on being a team and playing together throughout the rest of the season.

 

Baseball

New Canaan baseball has gone through big changes since last season. New head coach Geoff Lambert has taken over from Mitch Hoffman and is making his mark. The team’s record so far is 9-10. Coach Lambert is a police officer and is well recognized by the teammates from working at New Canaan High School.

The team has strong pitchers such as senior Zack Lopez who threw a shutout against Trumbull and senior pitcher Patrick Metzger who will continue his strong streak on the mound.

At the plate the boys have strong hitters like seniors Griffin Arnone, Kyle Demayo, and sophomore Frank Ramppen.

The boys didn’t make FCIACS, but are hoping to make it far in states.

 

 

 

Softball

After losing key seniors, including the Keshin twins who now play for University of Virginia, the NCHS Girls Softball team wasn’t sure what to expect. Senior leader Gillian Kane has had been working to mold the young team this season. “Last year we had a very experienced team, and after graduating eight, this year we had to learn to play with each other again, but luckily the chemistry came quickly” Gillian said.

New Coach Joel Geriak and senior leaders Gillian Kane and Allison Fitzpatrick have led the team to their current record of 7-11. Kane recently committed to Springfield to play softball next spring, and this season has struck out 17 people continuously in one game, breaking her previous record of 14.

The team plays Wilton for the second time this Tuesday and hope to defeat them once again. They only need one more win in order to qualify for states and hope to finish the season with a winning record.

 

Girls Tennis

The girls tennis team is being led by senior co-captains Ashley Walker and Cassidy Little. The girls are a strong 13-3.

Excelling in the singles matches are senior co-captain Ashley Walker, and freshman Maddie Wilson. Wilson has risen to the job earning the number two spot in singles and is really showing how much she can do.

In the doubles category, the number 1 team consists of junior Jenny Loomis and freshman Jordan Lee. While the number 2 team is co-captain Little and junior Chloe Sigg. Both are winning matches and showing off her skills.

Little says the team is focusing on being a team and prioritize that even though tennis may seem individual, they have to act as one.

 

Boys Tennis

The boys tennis team is at an eager 11-4 record. With junior co-captains Matt Brand and Luke Crowley the boys are having an outstanding season so far.

The team has close wins against competitive teams such as Wilton, Ludlowe, and Weston.

Some standout players this season are junior JJ Lee and freshman Sai Akavaramu.

The boys look to continue their strong record for the rest of the season and grow as a team.

 

 

 

Girls Golf

The girls golf team has an outstanding 7-0 season so far. Coach Priscilla Schulz has lead the team to big victories against teams such as Darien.

Senior Lauren Capone is making a difference in the girls record by scoring a 45 against Greenwich. Junior Meghan Mitchell and Morgan Hibbert have also been improving on their game coming off of a 6 previous wins.

The girls still have a lot to come with states and FCIACs ahead.

 

Boys Golf

With junior co-captains Gunnar Granito and Grant Mellinger the boys gold team has been having themselves a great season.

New to the team is freshman Owen Ives, he lead the team up until the Darien game where he shot a 45. Other underclassman standouts have been sophomore Max Orwicz.

The team has strong players and are only looking to improve as the season moves into states and FCIACs.

 

Girls Track

Girls and boys track have has some outstanding performances by all grades. The girls captains are Nicole LaBadie, Paulina Cortina, Chloe McAuliffe, and Megan Waldron.

Some stand out runners this season have been junior Elaina Tiller, and sophomore Georgia Stewart.

Tiller participated in the distance melody with McAuliffe, Elena Unger, and Katie Miller, they finished with an 13:39 landing in seventh place.

The girls are done with their regular season, but are looking ahead to states and FCIACs.

 

Boys Track

After losing lots of star runners from last season, the boys track team still has lots of potential. With senior co-captains Alex Urban, Sean Knight, Henry Asker, and Max Koschnitzke.

Senior co-captain Sean Knight is coming off winning FCIACs the past 2 years for indoor hurdles and coming in 2nd in the state for hurdling.

Junior Jack Conley came in second against East Lyme throwing 46 feet and 5 inches. Sophomore Chris Carratu lead to rams in long jump with 18 feet against East Lyme.

Urbahn, Koschnitzke, and Noah Levine had an outstanding performance in the distance melody relay finishing with the time of 11:16.

With states and FCIACs in view the boys look to set some records and improve on their speed.
