With Career Night tomorrow, the committee is making final preparations for the event. However, those running the event are not the only ones doing last minute alterations, as speakers are also planing for the big night.
Because of the vast background of the speakers, students will have the opportunity to learn extensively about fields of interest. “I just think everyone’s going to leave there with information that they didn’t have when they came in,” Chair Julie Brand said. “Our group of speakers is so impressive.”
In getting the involvement of these “impressive” speakers, Mrs. Brand and her co-chairs were able to network locally and through connections. “A lot of it is networking,” Mrs. Brand said. “Everybody knows somebody. So many of our speakers are parents of New Canaan High School kids or parents in the community. Sometimes people come to us, or we use previous speakers who we thought did an excellent job and got good feedback. We’ve also contacted alums who we hear about and know about, and they know other people.”
These alums will be present this year, in unprecedented numbers. About 20 NCHS alumni are returning to talk to students. Mrs. Brand sees the advantage in having former NCHS students talk to the current student body. “I think high school kids are really going to be able to relate to them and approach them,” she said. “I think that’ll be a nice connection for the students. A lot of these alums are really excited about coming and talking, because they were there not too long ago.”
According to Mrs. Brand, all the speakers are enthusiastic in presenting at Career Night. “Adults want to help kids, and they are so happy to impart their knowledge,” she said. “I think when that happens, then kids really can find their path.”
