Shark in the Water by V V Brown probably played on the radio five times on the car ride to Washington D.C. over break before it was stuck in my head. Looking at the lyrics I have no idea what the message of the song is, but take a shot at interpreting what “That is right, rules are rules, this is what I get for just winding you up. Jack be nimble, Jack be quick, please don’t make too much of it, it ain’t that serious. Baby there’s a shark in the water, there’s something underneath my bed. Oh please believe I said, Baby there’s a shark in the water…. I caught them barking at the moon, better be soon.”
V V Brown aka Vanessa Brown aka “Geeki” is a British recording artist primarily signed to Island Record in the UK and Capitol Records here in the U.S. Shark in the Water was one of four singles on Brown’s first album, Traveling Like The Light, which came out in July of ’09. Shark in the Water is on the radio an awful lot for what had been a virtually unknown song. It’s also probably why the Los Angeles Times wrote an article calling her a “2009 artist to watch”. Even the New York Times wrote about her a year ago in a piece entitled, “The Creative Rebirth of V V Brown”
I don’t know why, but I didn’t hear this song last year and now it’s played on radio stations all over the place. Looks like the song is having a comeback. Now I just have to figure out what those cryptic lyrics mean…
