Every year, the art club puts on the fall art show to showcase the students artistic abilities through different media styles. This year, Art Club adviser and Teacher Kimanne Core, has been given responsibility for leading the organization of the show.

There is a lot of preparation that goes into making the show successful. “We have to pick out dates in order to collect the art and frame it in time,” said Ms. Core, “Then we come up with a poster design and plan for our reception opening,” she said.

“It’s a student themed show, they choose the theme. The art club, which meets on Tuesdays, meets to discuss it.” said Maggie Pennoyer, art teacher and contributing advisor for the show. “Those not in the art club that want to contribute to the show may join the Gallery Committee, which is just a group of students responsible for hanging up the art for the show,” she said.

The theme for this year’s show is Reflection and Refractions, a theme that allows students to interpret in any way they see fit. “It was just creative art pieces created by the students over the summer,” said senior and art club president Avery Morawa.

“We will have an opening this year since we didn’t have one last year,” said Ms. Core. This year’s opening is on Thursday November, 17th between 5 and 6:30pm. The showcase will be open to visitors until Friday January, 6th.

There is a variety of media being used in this show, allowing students to express their broad perspectives on the theme. “Students submit their art and then a jury decides which pieces get displayed,” said Ms. Pennoyer. “It’s what moves them, it’s the pieces that communicate the theme,” she said.

The senior student leaders of the art club have enhanced their creativity by seeking inspiration from past art shows. Avery was also involved in the preparation of last year’s show. “I was inspired by helping out with the art show last year,” Avery said. “I had such a good time and a great experience that I decided to come back this year,” said Avery.

Many students share details about their lives through photography, painting, sketching, or digital art. “I tend to use art to speak from personal experiences,” Avery said. “I feel like art in many ways can communicate beyond what words and actions can say so typically my art comes from a very deep place of internal reflection,” she said.

This year’s theme will help the students develop a greater understanding of their artistic abilities, “We want the theme broad enough it can be taken in multiple meanings,” she said. “The idea of reflections and/or refractions is a theme where students can run the gamut,” said Ms. Core. “From literal interpretations of reflections as in mirrors or water, to more subliminal or expressive reflections of feelings, moods, and abstractions,” she said.

“We are so blessed as a community to have such a wonderful education in the arts. It is such a privilege to come and see such high level art work done by our students in shows such as this one.” says music teacher Sarah Gleason.

Students and staff are encouraged to view the artwork in the school’s lobby and hopefully can make their own interpretations from the artwork they see.
