As most seniors are starting to slack off, boys’ Varsity lacrosse captain, Bobby Distler, is in his final lacrosse season at NCHS before he heads to Lynchberg college to play for the Division 3 Hornets.
Bobby has been playing lacrosse since he was young, as a midfielder and specializing in the face-offs. “I started playing lacrosse in an organized league in second grade but I had been playing for a while before that,” said Bobby. He was also a member of the NCHS Varsity football team for all four years of his high school career.
However, due to multiple injuries, Bobby was unable to play during the time that scouts and colleges were recruiting. Because of this, Bobby was forced to take unique approach on the recruitment process. “Since I was unable to go to any recruiting camps or play in summer tournaments, after I sent in all of my applications for the schools I could see myself attending and playing lacrosse at,” said Bobby. “I sent in film with just a message regarding my background, grades, and in my case injuries, just so they knew a bit about me.”
By approaching the recruitment process untraditionally, Bobby was able to find a school he would excel at on and off the field. “I chose Lynchburg for a few different reasons. First, and most importantly was that Lynchburg has what I want to study and I really loved the campus,” said Bobby. “My dad always told me, ‘I would have to choose a school that if lacrosse went away tomorrow, I would still be happy there’.”
Although athletes are recruited individually, Bobby said he would not be where he was today without the help of his team. “My experience has been incredible at the high school. I have been playing with most of these kids since elementary and middle school,” said Bobby. “When you are with people for that long you definitely build up strong relationships and I would say that is what I will miss the most.”
