On March 1, the YMCA High School Leadership Board and the Outback Student Governing Board (SGB) held the second annual CAPT week Rave at the Outback Teen Center from 8 to 11 pm.
Last year, the Y High Leadership Board held the CAPT week dance, using The Rave as the theme of the upperclassmen-only dance. “The title stuck, so we chose to do the same theme,” Y High Leader Co-President, senior Dolly Meckler said. “At the dance, we cover the windows and use black lights. We also play a lot of techno music,” she said.
In anticipation of the event, the boards had to prepare for both the event and the success that would come from it. “We each had separate meetings and were responsible for different tasks. The Y High Leaders were in charge of ticket sales and music, and the SGB was in charge of decoration,” Dolly said.
The Y High Leaders consist of Co-Presidents and seniors Dolly Meckler and Kevin Campbell, student reasurers and secretaries, student members who are seniors, juniors, and sophomores, as well as Davie Cedela, an adult who supervises the meetings and is involved in the YMCA.
Prior to the event, these students hoped that this year’s Rave would be as popular as the last one. “A lot of students heard really good things about last year’s Rave, so I think it’s going to be a huge success,” Dolly said. “It’s as if it’s become a CAPT week tradition.”
Senior Emily Tohir thought the rave was successful. “Although it was really hot in there and got a little crowded, the Rave was fun because there was a lot of dancing and good music,” she said. “It’s fun to be with your friends and dance.”
The Leadership Board also hoped for similar behavior from students attending. “Last year’s Rave was a huge success, everyone had a blast and there weren’t any really bad or unfortunate alcohol related incidents,” Dolly said. “Hopefully, this dance has a positive reputation and will be continued in years to come.”
The event as a fundraiser was incredibly successful. “We sold 200 tickets, the maximum capacity for The Outback, so it was completely sold out,” Dolly said. Tickets were sold at lunch on Monday and were given on a first come, first serve basis, allowing students to reserve tickets.
The fundraised money, about $2000, will go to both the SGB and the Y High Leaders. “I know that with the Y High Leaders, we’ll use that money to fund other events and with all the remaining money, we will donate it to various charities,” Dolly said.
If students are interested in becoming part of the YMCA High School Leadership Board, they should contact Dolly Meckler or Kevin Campbell. The board meets once a month on Thursday nights to come up with fundraising ideas and plan fun events for high school students.
