Waking up to see the announcement on your phone the schools canceled and you have a snow day is one of the best feelings ever. No school, a sparkling untouched blanket of fresh snow outside, and endless possibilities to have fun and relax. But with so many options, how do you make the most of your day? Here’s a list of some of the ultimate snow day activities to help you choose.

1. Build a Snowman! There’s nothing more classic than a snowman, so start rolling up big snowballs and stacking them to create your frosty friend. This activity is much better to do with  a friend or sibling. Add a carrot nose, a scarf, and any other accessories you want to add to your snowman. Don’t forget to take a photo of your accomplishment when you’re all done!

2. Sledding is one of the best ways to make use of and appreciate the snow. So grab a sled, toboggan, or even a big piece of cardboard and head to the closest and most importantly BIGGEST hill you can find. The thrill of racing down a snowy slope is unbeatable. Don’t forget to bring your friends or family along for some friendly competition.

Tip: If you don’t have a sled, try using a garbage can lid or a sturdy plastic bin lid.

3. Warm Up with Hot Chocolate! After spending time outside, there’s nothing better than coming inside to a hot mug of hot chocolate. Top it off with whipped cream, marshmallows, or even candy canes for extra fanciness.

Tip: You can use a large candy cane stick to stir your hot coco.

4. Snow Fort! Building a snow fort is something everyone has to do at least once. If the snow is packing-friendly, build a snow fort in your yard! Teamwork is the best way to get it done so make sure you grab a friend or family member. If you prefer to stay warm, create a blanket fort indoors with pillows, and cozy blankets. Either way, it’s the perfect spot to hang out.

5. Bake! Making yummy treats are ideal for a canceled school day. Cookies, brownies, or even homemade cinnamon rolls will make your house smell amazing and keep you busy while the snow keeps falling.

Tip: For whatever you decide to make, keep an eye on how long you keep your treat in the oven. You don’t want anything to burn!

6. Movie Marathon! Snuggling up on the couch with blankets or staying in your cozy bed, and even better your indoor fort makes for the perfect spots to be in for a movie marathon. Pick a theme of movies like Disney classics, movie series, superhero films, or rom-coms and enjoy hours of entertainment.

Tip: Don’t forget the popcorn and M&M’s!

7. Snowball Fight! Gather your siblings, neighbors, friends, or family members for a competitive snowball battle. Set boundaries, build some defenses, use your snow fort for defense and let the snowballs fly! Just remember to play fair and keep it fun.

Tip: Make it a team battle and don’t lose.

8. Try Snow Painting! All you need is a spray bottle, some water, and a few drops of food coloring. Go outside and “paint” on the snow, creating colorful designs or writing messages. It’s a unique way to get creative in the winter wonderland.

Tip: Watch out for already yellow snow before you started painting, you don’t want to touch it (it’s pee).

9. Read a Book or Start a Journal. Snow days are the perfect time to relax, reset and slow down. Curl up with a good book you’ve been meaning to read, or start a journal to document your day. It’s important to make time for yourself. It’s also a great way to relax and unwind.

10. Take Photos and Make Memories! Don’t forget to document your snow day fun! Take photos of your snowman, sledding adventures, or cozy indoor activities. Your parents and grandparents will love to see new photos of you and later on you’ll love to be able to look back on these memories.

Snow days are the best news kids in school can get, so make the most of them by trying out these fun activities. Whether you’re having fun outside in the cold making the most of it or staying cozy indoors, there’s something for everyone. So grab your blankets and pour yourself some hot chocolate, and enjoy the snow while it lasts!
