Last Saturday, September 10, the New Canaan Rams football team faced off against the Trinity Catholic Crusaders on the new and improved Dunning Field. Despite not having a single passing touchdown, the Rams managed to win the game with a score of 20 to 6, scoring by running the ball.
After many intensive practices, the boys in red delivered a strong performance for the crowd’s first sporting event of the year. Before the game had started, senior captain Tommy Root and the team knew that they were ready to take on the Crusaders. “We had our assignments going into the game and if we executed them, we knew we would be able to win,” Tommy said. “We go into every game thinking we are going to win because if you think you’re gonna lose, you’re most likely gonna lose.”
Entering the field with a determined mindset, the boys were quick to score first with a quick rushing touchdown from senior co-captain Ryan O’Connell. However, the Crusaders struck back with a touchdown of their own, but failed to on their two-point conversion attempt, allowing the Rams to keep their lead throughout the first half.
Trinity’s touchdown later in the first half was their last, as New Canaan sealed the win later on in the game with 2 more touchdowns, one from Ryan O’Connell, and another from a pick-six by senior co-captain James Freyre.
With strong performances from players both on offense and defense, senior co-captain Tommy believes there are many players to watch this season. “I would say keep an eye out for Sean Knight, Graham Braden, Jack Hoelzer, Jack Kircher, Jackson Appelt, and Justin Greco,” Tommy said. “There are a variety of players from different grades, but they are the six I would say to look out for.”
The Rams are now prepping for their Friday home game against Ridgefield hoping to build off their momentum from last week’s 20-6 win. The team has been watching film, practicing everyday, and lifting to prep for their match. “Ridgefield is one of the better teams in the FCIAC this year so I would expect a hard fought game from both teams,” Tommy said. “We have been practicing hard all week and plan to do more in practice as the week progresses.”
Friday’s game will start at 7:00 pm on Dunning Field. Make sure to stop by and support the Rams!
