With 2:33 remaining in the fourth quarter of the CIAC Class L Championship game at Rentschler Field, senior captain Alex Benevento barreled into the endzone on a 6-yard run for what would be the game-winning touchdown in a 28-21 New Canaan victory over rival Darien. Benevento had two touchdowns on the night, and out of his 17 touchdowns all season, this was his most meaningful.

“I’ve dreamed of moments like that as a kid,” Alex said about his touchdown. “Being able to run back to my teammates, who I had been through so much with, was just so special”. Benevento was a huge contributor to the success this season and was one of many seniors who led the Rams team.

That touchdown rush was one of many dreamlike plays that occurred during the final five minutes of the 4th quarter. The play that set up Benevento’s touchdown was a defensive highlight that silenced the Darien crowd. Senior Ryan Barnard made the play of his career as he was able to extend his hand on Rolapp’s arm, forcing the ball out of his hand. Barnard was able to recover the fumble which would set up the offense’s winning drive.

To put them in the position to take the lead, with the Rams down 14-21, New Canaan took their shot towards the end zone as Robinson rolled out of the pocket and hit senior Will Langford. The pass hit Langford perfectly in stride, who was able to toe-tap both feet inside the endzone and secure the game-tying touchdown. Langford credited his teammates for the catch. “Credit to Luke Robinson for throwing an unreal ball with perfect placement,” Langford said. “And credit to the offensive line and the rest of the team for keeping us in the game.”

Darien took the lead in the fourth quarter via a 1-yard rushing touchdown by Briggs McGuckin. The rush broke a 14-14 tie after a scoreless third.

The 2023  Rams ended the season with a 13-1 record and a Class L Championship. It was another successful season for Coach Marinelli as it was his 14th State Championship at New Canaan High School.
