At long last, Outer Banks is back … and better than ever?
We’ll have to see.
Finally, on February 23, our screens will once again be filled with the sight of the Pogues and their perpetually growing stream of enemies.
This show – geared toward an audience of teens who appreciate a balanced plot of adventure, mystery, and romance – first reached our screens in April of 2020 amidst the pandemic. Ever since then, the show has captivated audiences across the globe.
Last season, we reunited with the Pogues in the Bahamas after being left on a devastating cliffhanger. In the season one finale, the main antagonist, John B, and his love interest, Sarah Cameron, are stranded at sea. Back in the OBX, everyone assumes that they’re dead and that John B is the perpetrator in the murder of beloved police officer, Sheriff Peterkin. While the Pogues back at home – Pope, JJ, and Kiara (Kie) – fight to clear his name, John B and Sarah struggle to escape the danger of the Bahamas.
Similar to how season two explored Pope’s character and his relation to plot – specifically his ties to the hunt for gold and Denmark Tanny – season three will explore more of Kiara’s story and her involvement with El Dorado.
This upcoming season will include a new edition to the tight-knit group of Pogues, Cleo, who we met in the Bahamas in season two. The interrelationships between the Pogues serves as an integral part of the plot and is something viewers are eagerly waiting to learn more about. More specifically, viewers are excited for JJ and Kiara’s relationship, coined with the ship name “Jiara,” as well as Rafe Cameron and Ward Cameron, brother and father to Sarah, who are both currently on psychotic breaks.
Season two left us with another cliffhanger, one that has tormented fans for almost two years now. Recently, creators and executive producers have been divulging information about the coming season in the form of little hints and teasers.
This cliffhanger left many viewers wondering what could come of season three, some popular theories including magic, Big John (who was revealed to be alive at the end of season two) working against his own son, and that creepy Limbrey is the mother to one of the Pogues: perhaps Sarah and Rafe’s birth mother?
On January 3, the season three poster was released. The poster, which is very similar to the previous two, boasts the saying, “Nothing to Lose” and displays a silhouette of the Pogues standing atop a cliff, their hands raised triumphantly in the air. Next to them, a make-shift flag with “Pogues” written across it waves proudly in the wind alongside its creators. Any true fan would have the knowledge to know that the happiness radiating from the poster is not bound to last for long.
In September, a minute long trailer was released, absent of any juicy details about the coming season. However, on February 2nd, roughly a month before the release of the show, a detailed video was released, showing clips of the plot and confirming many suspicions of viewers.
Netflix released the following summary of the new season:
“After losing the gold and fleeing the Outer Banks, Season 3 finds the Pogues washed ashore on a desert island that, for a brief moment, seems like an idyllic home. Officially deemed Poguelandia, the island’s newest residents spend their days fishing, swimming, and reveling in the carefree lifestyle of their temporary dwelling. But things quickly go south for John B, Sarah, Kiara, Pope, JJ, and Cleo when they find themselves once again caught up in a race for the treasure, quite literally running for their lives. They’re broke and far from home, they can’t trust anyone, Ward and Rafe are hungry for revenge, and there’s a ruthless Caribbean Don who will stop at nothing to find the bounty. Was the treasure ever within their reach? Or was it all a trap to stop them once and for all? Either way, it’s the Pogues against the world – and the only way out is together.”
