While all those associated with the NFL (fans, players, employees and owners included) are currently devastated over the lockout and the potential cancellation of the 2011 season, one man has decided to seek out good in the situation. Chad Ochocinco is in the process of trying out for the MLS club Sporting Kansas City, claiming playing professional soccer has always been a dream of his. While he hasn’t played in several years, Ochocinco says that he has been playing soccer since he was four, and has attempted to stay acclimated with the game throughout his time playing football.
Now the question is: why on earth is a guy making millions of dollars playing in the National Football League risking injury to play in the MLS? In my opinion, it is another one of Ochocinco’s popularity stunts. The guy goes to great lengths (at times, upwards of $50,000) to prove a point and get his face on T.V. In this case, he get’s to do both. If I were Roger Goodell or Mike Brown (Bengal’s owner), the last thing I’d want one of my star players doing is trying out for another sport. Not only is Ochocinco risking injury and, in turn, profit for the NFL and the Bengals, he is mocking the absence of an NFL season.
However, Ochocinco’s motive does not mean he is wrong. It is these kinds of acts by players that might give the owners a push in the right direction. While he may not deserve to, I hope to God Ochocinco makes the team just to give the scumbag owners of the NFL a taste of their own medicine.
