New Canaan Boys Soccer won their first game of the season on Wednesday, September 19, defeating Wilton 3-0 at Dunning Stadium.
Junior Niko Grubelic struck first for the Rams, scoring with four minutes remaining in the first half. Senior Captain Michael Gabriel then doubled the Rams’ lead with 23 minutes to go in the second half, scoring from a corner kick, referred to as an Olimpico.
Michael was happy to score his first career varsity goal, but also to finally get in the win column. “This first goal was a long time coming,” the central defender said. “But the most important part was that we picked up the three points.”
The finishing touch of the game came via the left foot of senior Max Maggard. Max’s goal came with 19 minutes left and ended all hope of a Wilton comeback.
Michael was incredibly proud of the team’s effort. “It was a really gritty performance,” he said. “We won every fifty-fifty ball and dominated the midfield. We took our chances and put the ball in the back of the net.”
The win brings the Rams’ record to 1-2-2 on the year, as they now turn their attention to Stamford tomorrow at Dunning Stadium.
