The NCHS branch of the National Honors Society (NHS) will officially induct 57 new students from the class of 2016 in the spring of 2015. According to NHS advisor and math teacher Roger Hansell, these students had to have a comprehensive weighted average of at least a 92, be involved in volunteer or service work, and a maintained record of excellent school behavior and demonstrated leadership in the school or community to be accepted.
As members of NHS, these students will attend chapter meetings and participate in chapter service projects that benefit the school and community, according to their website.
Mr. Hansell says the focus for this years class of members will be to develop a comprehensive student tutoring program. The idea is that NHS members will tutor their peers in whatever subject is challenging to them. “We’ve already gotten positive feedback from parents and students alike regarding this initiative,” said Mr. Hansell.
This years’ class is eager to participate in the program. “This years’ inductees clearly value their potential to help other students, as we’ve already gotten many volunteers to tutor other students,” said President of the 2016 chapter, Jane Reed.
