As the middle of second quarter nears, Ms. Lee has been posting fliers around the school announcing the Math Department’s 4th Annual Math Music Video Contest. The contest, created four years ago by Math Department Chair Jennifer Lee, was designed to help Algebra students learn formulas. Within the last two years, the Math Department decided to open up the competition to all math levels.
According to Ms.Lee, the competition offers an alternative method of learning.”I didn’t think learning Pop Goes the Weasel to remember the quadratic formula was that interesting,” she said. “I thought everyone could be more creative and could make more relevant and memorable songs to remember a math concept.”
Last year’s winners were former seniors Jack Atchue, Graham Bradley and Phil Taraco with their SOHCAHTOA video. “This year it will be interesting if anyone can match their video,” Ms. Lee said.
All students who enter the contest will receive 3% extra credit on their next test grade, and the videos who make the top five receive 5% extra credit. All videos must be under two minutes and have to be submitted to any math teacher by 8 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 19. The Math Department will choose the top five videos from those submitted based on their quality of math content and entertainment value. Voting and viewing of the videos will take place during class the day before holiday vacation.
The winner will also receive an $40 iTunes gift card, with second place receiving $25 and third place receiving $15.
