From the moment the last flake of snow melts into the ground, Spring Fever is in full swing. Though Connecticut temperatures only max out at around 70 degrees, students are not taking any sunny days for granted.
Some warmer states may call it crazy, but students are taking complete advantage of the warmer days, at least clothing-wise. “It’s acceptable to start wearing flip-flops or sandals starting in March, assuming that it’s not still snowing,” junior Kimmy Glerum said.
Junior Brian Boland feels the same, taking the opportunity to ditch the long sleeve shirts and jeans. “From the day it hits 60 degrees, you will see me in shorts and a t-shirt,” he said.
Just looking around school grounds, it’s clear that many students and faculty are easily adjusting to the warm weather. Open windows and convertibles with their tops down are common sights around the parking lot. “Driving with the windows down is, by far, the best part of the spring season,” senior Chase Krivo said.
Junior Catherine Betack has similar views and uses her free periods to soak up some much needed sunlight. “I love when it is nice out during my frees and I can go and study outside on the [track]mats,” she said. “It’s also nice for tanning!”
Not only are the blue skies appreciated outside of school, but students are affected in the classroom as well. Stuffy rooms and dark days can seem a distant memory in the sun of springtime. “It’s great when you look outside and the sun is shining,” sophomore Austin Wolff said. “The light makes it easier to focus in class, and when teachers take us outside for class, it makes the whole day so much better.”
But this spring also brings about a feeling of nostalgia for the class of 2010 as the year comes to a close. Many seniors spend their last days as NCHS students out on the patio, coming together under the sunshine as a full class.
Senior Isobelle Hemmers feels the weather will bring her senior year to a beautiful close. “Spring at the high school is the best, because all the seniors come together and my friends and I like to be outside as much as possible — bike riding, long boarding and just soaking up the sun with everyone,” she said.
