On November 25 and 26, students participated in International Day, an event hosted annually by the foreign language department (with the exception of last year). During the two days preceding Thanksgiving break, students were given the opportunity to celebrate and immerse themselves in the cultures of various countries where the languages of Spanish, French, Latin and Chinese are native. This year’s International Day showcased countries such as France, the Dominican Republic, Ancient Rome and Japan.

In the weeks leading up to this highly anticipated event, students were tasked with various activities. Some were assigned to decorate classroom doors, competing for the best design. Others cooked and baked foods native to their countries with spreads ranging from sushi to flan. Many students also prepared presentations for their peers on various aspects of their respective countries, such as the best tourist destinations or popular sports.

After days of organization by staff and students alike, the day of celebration finally came. Students were given ‘passports’ which directed them to four separate destinations. Students had the opportunity to learn about the world through their senses: eating food, singing songs, watching videos and listening to their peers.

International Day is a pillar of foreign language education at NCHS, but moreover, it is a pillar of the NCHS student experience. Students relish the opportunity to learn about foreign cultures and expand their knowledge of the world right here at school during International Day.
