On Monday, October 31st, the class of 2017 took charge to make Halloween at NCHS a little different this year. With the support of Principal Egan, the seniors gathered spooky supplies and decorated the Underground with spiderwebs, bloody walls, a fog machine, assorted candy bowls, and a dressed up Trump doll in order to boost school morale and spirit. Seniors signed up to come in the morning to set up and during their free periods to manage the special effects.

After initially coming up with the idea to create the Halloween Hallway, senior Maddie Smith led the rest of her grade in organizing the project. “My friends and I talked about decorating the Underground during gym class,” she said. “We all thought it would be a really fun way to get into the Halloween spirit.”

Alex Esposito, a senior who helped coordinate the event, feels that the Underground allowed students to have some fun before the end of the quarter. “We wanted to incorporate new festivities to take away from the stress of the first quarter ending,” she said. “We decided to use the Underground because it already had a lot of color and no windows, which made it easier to put up decorations.”

A participant in the project, senior Shannon Bucci, believes that the hallway provided a comfortable setting for students and adults to come together to promote school morale. “I think that people generally appreciate unexpected things and bolstering school spirit,” she said. “I’m hoping that it positively influenced the school climate among the grades and faculty.”

Alex encourages other students to continue this trend of school spirit for future holidays. “I hope that we inspired the underclassmen to have fun with school during the holidays,” she said. “I’m optimistic that we can do similar projects on other holidays, and that even more people will participate to spread school spirit!”
