Last year, the gymnastics team finished with a 1-7 record and placed eighth at FCIACs. With the loss of seniors Raven Killinger, Nicole Arellano and Marissa Tamburro, the girls are focusing on rebuilding the team. However, junior co-captains Rachel Hardy and Sara Brindisi are ready to get their teammates prepared for a more successful season.
Sara feels that the incoming freshman are going to help the team on their road to recovery. “We are gaining Carey Callahan and Nicoletta Bonsanti who both have very strong potential,” Sara said. “Nicoletta did gymnastics before high school and Carey is new but excelling fast.”
As sophomore captain last year, Rachel learned that an optimistic attitude is the key to their success. “To improve this year I just want to encourage the girls and show them how great of a sport gymnastics is and how fun competitions are,” Rachel said. “If we work hard and try to make every practice, I think that all of our scores will improve and we’ll have a great chance in FCIACs and States.”
The gymnastics team is looking forward to competing and advancing their skills, but the meets that they are anticipating most are against Westhill and Darien. Since NCHS does not have a gymnastic facility to hold meets, the girls’ home gym is considered to be Westhill, which makes them more excited to compete against them. “It’s always fun to go up against Westhill because they are our home team, so we have a bunch of friends that we’re competing with,” Sara said. “But meets against Darien are the best because the rivalry makes the girls push that much harder.”
The girls’ first meet is Tuesday, January 6 at 5:30 pm at Westhill (home).
