On Wednesday September 21, the girls’ soccer team traveled to Darien to face the Blue Wave for their fifth game of the season. The Rams came into the game after Monday’s 2-1 win against Brien McMahon and a 2-0-2 record, while Darien was 3-0-1. However, after the game, one of the teams would no longer be undefeated.
Unfortunately for the Rams, the Wave would be the team to come away with the win, beating past New Canaan by a score of 3-0.
Just two minutes into the game, the Blue Wave took an early lead after a through ball was played in front of the goal. Darien forward Katie Ramsay beat out the New Canaan defense for pace and placed the ball in the back of the net, putting the Rams behind 1-0.
The girls held the Wave for ten strong minutes until Darien’s Nathalie Bravo was passed the ball just outside of the 18 yard box. She fired the ball into the net from distance, placing it in the top right corner beyond the outstretched Ram’s goalkeeper, junior Kendall Curtain.
However, this would be the Wave’s last goal of the half as New Canaan’s defense and goalkeeper held them for the next 20 minutes. At halftime, the score was 2-0 Darien.
New Canaan’s defense and team overall improved in the second half, but was unable to score against Darien’s goalkeeper, Christine Fiore, who has allowed one goal this entire season.
In the second half, despite a hard-fought battle between the rival teams, Darien’s Ellen Harnish was able to put the Wave’s last goal on the board with 25 minutes left.
With a final score of 3-0 Darien, the Rams fell to 2-1-1, while Darien improved to 4-0-1. Despite the loss, the Lady Rams are still looking hopeful for the rest of the season with upcoming games against Trinity Catholic, Trumbull, and Westhill.
