On Tuesday, January 26, the girls’ basketball team faced the Norwalk Bears at home in the NCHS gym. Coming into the game with a 3-9 record, the girls were looking for a win to break the team’s two-game losing streak and possibly qualify for the postseason. However, this was not the case as the Rams fell to the Bears 46-32.

Just over three minutes into the game, the girls were tied at a score of 2-2. At the end of the quarter however, the Bears led the Rams 8-5. Just 26 seconds into the second quarter, Norwalk’s Asiah Knight was fouled and made both free throws, but junior Campbell Armstrong struck back with a layup making the score 10-7.

Soon after, New Canaan was called for another shooting foul where Norwalk was able to gain another point. By the end of the quarter, New Canaan was down 21-8, but with 1.8 seconds left, Campbell drained another three-pointer from the corner to put the team within ten points of the Bears as the buzzer sounded. The score at the half was 21-11 Norwalk. At the end of the third quarter, the Rams were down 39-21 as they were only able to score ten points.

Senior co-captain Olivia Hunsinger made the majority of her free throws as she drained two for two after being fouled with 5:41 left in the fourth quarter, as well as one of two after the Norwalk coach earned a technical foul for continuously yelling at the officials. Despite the Rams’ effort, holding Norwalk to only seven more points in the fourth quarter, the Bears came out on top with a score of 46-32.

Both sides played an aggressive second half tallying up more than ten fouls per team, but New Canaan’s final efforts to win failed as they got their tenth loss of the season. The girls’ next game is Monday, February 1, away against Ridgefield.
